Insecure Writers Support Group IWSG

IWSG Badge

Just a quick post here today since many of us are busy with the A to Z blog challenge. Given April is when taxes are due in the U.S., this is first year (2013) that I wrote off writing expenses. It's a motivator to sign up for conferences and workshops and national memberships when it's part of my small business as a writer. Now to get to that pesky income stage, where I'm making money from my writing and not just spending my own money.

Here's to dreams, and for more complicated taxes. Cheers!

Stay encouraged everyone, and keep working toward your publication goals. Even if it's taxes that motivate you :)

  1. Hooray for writing write-offs! Taxes are a pain, but I do feel a little burst of pride every time I file another receipt in my "writing business write-offs" folder. You're right--it is a motivator to invest in a writing career!

  2. My tax guy was so stoked for my writing career. He said he wants my book when it gets published. I reminded him I write teen romance, but I think he was just being nice anyway :)

  5. Whatever it takes as motivation, taxes, bills, buying groceries-- it's all good!

  6. I do my best, right now, to not generate any expenses. Once I have income to cover them, I will re-think that.

  7. It was my first year doing that too. It's a little more work on the taxes, but it's gratifying in a way. :)

  9. It really is about staying encouraged, isn't it? But it's a nice reminder that what we do, although we love it, is a business. And there are many businesses that don't turn a profit right away. Here's the profits in our near future!

  10. The taxes are a pain, but it's a sign you're getting somewhere! You can't write off expenses unless you also have income, so. . . :)
