Blogging A to Z: Burton Guster

Welcome to the A to Z blogging challenge! All month long we'll be creating posts for each letter of the alphabet according to a theme. Click here to see the list of participating blogs.

My theme is Memorable Characters featuring characters from books, movies, and TV.

Burton "Gus" Guster

From: Psych

Known for: snack attacks, putting buddy Shawn in his place

Burton aka Gus is one of my favorite characters on any TV show. He's part straight man to fake psychic Shawn's constant chaos, but he often joins in with his own ridiculousness. Some of the funniest moments on the show are his snap reactions. He also is a Harry Potter fan, tap dancer, former a capella singer, has a "super sniffer" nose, and a seemingly bottomless stomach.

Psych just finished an eight season run on USA network. It's cleverly-written with a lot of in-jokes that reward viewers the more you watch. Out of a very funny cast, Gus is still my favorite. How can you not love him when Claire Huxtable plays his mom?

Have you seen Psych? Will you morn the loss of new episodes with me?

  1. Yes, I've seen Psych, and enjoyed every episode I watched. The rest of my family have seen every episode to date, and if there were just a few more hours in the day, I might have too! Gus is certainly a great side-kick for Shawn. But then that show has a great cast of characters, period. I think one of the things I like most about it is the way it doesn't take itself too seriously. If I recall, I think they even once played on the fact that it and The Mentalist have a premise in common (though Psych came first). :)

As for mourning its passing... I'm in two minds. It's always sad when a great show goes off the air. But it's even worse when a great show passes its prime, and the producers are too focused on the ad $$$ to see it's time to call it a day.

    1. Psych arguably was past its prime with 8 seasons; the last two were very uneven, though there are some great episodes within them. I also like the light-heartedness of the show and the clever humor.

They make a lot of Mentalist jokes. The series finale had 3 special guest stars that all resulted from ongoing in-jokes with the series. One I didn't even fully get until I read a recap because I didn't recognize the actor.

One said point is they weren't able to get Emilio Estevez, though they had the other main characters from The Breakfast Club as guest stars throughout the series. They still did a nod to the Estevez with a framed picture of Martin Sheen (his father) who Dule Hill (Gus) worked with on The West Wing. Fans love that stuff!

  3. I love Gus and his perpetually frustrated look! He also has very nice shirts lol. We're on season 3 of Psych, so we still have lots more Gus to look forward too. Great character pick!

    1. Seasons 2-4 or 5 are probably the best. Like a lot of shows, the first year they are growing into the roles, and the later years the premise has worn a little thin. Though Woody in the morgue is one of my favorites and he doesn't show up until midway.

  4. Oh Gus! I adore Psych, even though a lot of the pop culture references are waaay over my head, but somehow I still laugh anyway. Gus is definitely a favourite of mine, mostly because of his deadpan facial expressions and general lovable-ness. Is that a word? Well, it is now, at any rate :D

  5. I LOOOVE Gus! And every single fake name Shawn introduces him as.

  6. How did I miss this yesterday? Gus is my favorite on that show. Or is it Chocolate Columbo? Ovaltine Jenkins? Heck, you could make an A to Z on just Gus's nicknames.

    1. Haha... yes, the nicknames. Ovaltine Jenkins is so terrible but funny!

  8. He is such an awesome, amazing character! I love all the 80s references on that show too; it's perfection! :)
