Blogging A to Z: Ichabod Crane

Welcome to the A to Z blogging challenge! All month long we'll be creating posts for each letter of the alphabet according to a theme. Click here to see the list of participating blogs.

My theme is Memorable Characters featuring characters from books, movies, and TV.

Ichabod Crane

From: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving

Known For: skinnyness, quest to defeat headless horseman

While I enjoy Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, and Christopher Walken, (and there are many other versions), this ode to Ichabod comes from the recent TV adaptation Sleepy Hollow which debuted last fall on Fox. The show satisfies a scratch I didn't know I was itching for. Ichabod rises from his grave after the headless horseman makes an appearance in the modern age, and eventually partners with Lt. Abbie Mills who is investigating the death of her partner. The series combines supernatural elements, history (well, National Treasure-level history), and mystery in a really fun caper. Ichabod is perplexed by taxes levied on baked goods (sales tax on doughnuts), amazed that pistols can shoot more than one bullet before reloading, and spooked by technology in general. The show works in just enough fish-out-of-water elements for comic relief without going overboard.

Which is your favorite version of Ichabod?

  1. I remember seeing Sleepy Hollow when I was quite young, but I haven't seen the newer one.

  2. I love Ichabod! The show is a bit of a stretch sometimes for me but I don't mind because I love the (quasi) historical aspect of it and I love watching Ichabod learn about modern life. EXCEPT- I really wish he'd put some normal clothes on already! He did for that one second, but come on! Wear some jeans, dude!
BTW, I wonder if/when it's coming back on TV?

    1. The show intentionally did a shortened first season and FOX renewed it for this fall :)

  3. I think my favorite version is the one my parents told me as a kid. That seems scarier than anything anyone can put on film. It made my imagination run wild!

  6. I haven't seen this version, and haven't read the story since I was in Junior High, but this one does look interesting.

  7. I love that character! He's probably the best representation of a person from the past showing up in the present, which is usually cheesy. Instead, he's charming and funny. Love him! I just hope Almost Human gets renewed as well, so they can be on together again. :)
