Ready. Set. Write! #5

Welcome to Ready. Set. WRITE! A summer writing intensive with the purpose of writing, revising, planning, and keeping each other accountable.

We will share goals on Mondays. You can sign up at any of the host blogs (Jaime, Alison, Katy, Erin). Don't forget to hop around to encourage other participants!

Last week's goals:
  • Tackle re-organization and edits for a different manuscript. I would like to re-craft previously edited-out scenes to add back into the novel (fun, huh?) and check for overall flow and themes related to specific feedback. STARTED AND SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS MADE!
  • Provide feedback on another writer's manuscript excerpt COMPLETE
  • Finish reading 2 current books and start/finish another over the long weekend FINISHED ONE BOOK, READ ANOTHER (Nantucket Blue, so good!), STARTED NEW BOOK
Goals for this week:
  • Work through several more chapters of edits. Write one new scene.
  • Prep a chapter submission for critique group next week
  • Possibly spend an hour or so plotting Camp Nano novel (the plotting is part of my goal)
  • Finish reading the book I started this weekend
  • Have fun with high school and college friends I'll see this coming weekend!
  • Start strong with the exercise and healthy eating challenge I'm doing with my fitness coach friend
Biggest challenge this week:

  • Re-organizing my current project. It's not a full rewrite, it's tweaking and adding back some of what was cut. All of it has a domino effect, so I need to be mindful of every change, that it flows with the rest of the story. Which leads me to this conclusion: any form of rewriting, small or large, is still a lot of work.
How did you do on your goals? OR, did you do anything fun over Fourth of July?

  1. The dreaded domino effect...I'm there right now, so I know *exactly* what you mean. Good luck adding back into your WiP and with all of the tweaking! And you're right: any form of rewriting is a lot or work. Sounds like you did really well meeting your goals this week. Here's to another productive week! :D

  2. That's so true about any form of rewriting! If you tweak one little thing (especially in dialogue), you have to make sure everything else lines up with it. Sounds like you have a busy week plan--hope it goes well for you!

  3. It's great that you got so much done last week. And I agree with your conclusion about rewriting. I thought my minor revisions wouldn't take very long, but I forgot the domino effect. It's definitely going to impact my goals for the week.

  4. Great to see other things than just writing in your goals. Other things are important too (needed the reminder). Congrats on getting so much done this last week!

  5. Awesome job on meeting so many of your goals this week! A good luck managing the domino effect. That can be scary. But the good thing is, it seems like you have a good idea of what you need to do and how to do it. Good luck with your goals this week!

  6. Oh yeah don't you love that cascade effect that most revision have!!! Means I have to re-read EVERYTHING, again, with an eagle eye, because I've caused embarrassing mistakes that way before!

  7. Yep, rewriting is really tricky, and the slightest change can alter the whole manuscript! Best of luck this week! :)

  8. I wish people had warned me about revisions before I hit one! Although then I might not have had the motivation to finish the first draft! Good luck with your work this week!

  9. A domino effect is exactly what it's like when you start pulling things apart to make changes. Or like unraveling a sweater and trying to knit it back together again. Good luck with all your revision challenges this week! I hope it all goes smoothly and flows well in the end!

  10. Ohmygosh - it is crazy how one change can affect so much. Good luck with that reorganization. I'm finding a little of that with my current revision. I'm changing the beginning a teensy bit, but I do have to be mindful as to how that might affect everything else. Good luck!

  11. Yes! I agree with you and everyone else, it's so hard to make sure you change everything that cascades from each change. But kind of fun in a problem solving way! Hope you have a good week! :)

  16. "any form of rewriting, small or large, is still a lot of work."

So true! I plan to do a little tweaking this week and I keep telling myself it'll be no big deal, but I keep putting it off for fear of the domino effect.

  17. Oh, the domino effect... My worst enemy these days. It seems like I can't change a WORD without having to go back and change a hundred others! Aren't revisions fun? Best of luck meeting your goals this week, Steph, and have fun with your friends!
