Blogging A to Z: Fringe

Fringe is one of the coolest shows on right now. I was hooked from the start, but the first glimpse of the parallel universe with airships and a still-copper Statue of Liberty gave me chills.

Agent Olivia Dunham works for the Fringe Division of the FBI, researching strange cases with genius scientist Dr. Bishop, his brilliant but street-smart son Peter, and Dr. Bishop's plucky assistant Astrid.

I was a huge X-Files fan, and Fringe feels like a second generation spin on similar monsters, anomalies and phenomena. But I tend to think Fringe delves deeper into weird, and its Big Bad isn't shady government conspiracy, but a corporate technology dynasty who take great liberties with human experimentation. Also, there's a parallel universe with an alter-ego of every person in the Fringe universe. Cool.

Why You Should Watch: If I didn't hook you with X-Files and airships, you can make a drinking game out of how many times Olivia is sent to the tank in season 1, or you can just enjoy the romantic tension of two leads whose relationship actually progresses. Sort of. Keep in mind that whole parallel universe part. Also, Walter Bishop is one of television's great characters. His mad scientist role is the perfect dynamic of arrogant brilliance with a dash of sensitivity.

Factoid: John Noble (Walter Bishop) has serious geek cred: he played Denethor in Lord of the Rings.

  1. Ooh, I am definitely intrigued by your X-Files comparison. I was so obsessed with that show that I wrote a fan-fic screenplay featuring Fox Mulder himself (along with his alter ego, David Duchovny) in a screenwriting class. It's a pretty good story, if you can overlook the rabid fan nerdery. ;)

  2. I have yet to see this show, but I have wanted to for ages. Maybe now is the time.

  3. @originaloflaura I excuse all X-Files nerdery because:

A)it was a very popular show
B)it helped bring the concept of cult TV and fan obsession we see all the time now into the mainstream
    C) Fox Mulder is awesome
    D) I may or may not have a Fox Mulder action figure, episode guide book, giant movie poster and handmade collage (done by a friend of course) of Mulder and Scully

Anyway, Fringe is cool, too :)

  5. Hmmm... Another show I've never watched. I obviously just don't watch enough television.

  6. I was all into this show and then, for whatever reason, didn't tune in this season. Has it been renewed for another season or cancelled? That might affect whether or not I choose to watch this season's episodes.

I too loved the parallel version of Earth and for the same reasons you mentioned. So cool :)

  7. I'm a fellow total FRINGE nut!!!

Dr. Bishop's lines are def the best on tv. He cracks me up.

And don't even get me started on Peter. *sigh* Or Lincoln. Poor guy. :)

  9. I was mad about this show but then got frustrated at something that was going on in the first few episodes of the latest series, then I ended up missing a few and that was it :-(

  10. You know, I don't think Joshua Jackson is all that good looking, but I love the character Peter Bishop, and thus, now like the actor.

  12. @Stephsco, ~gasp~ You didn't think Pacey was hot?! I guess he'll always be Pacey to me (from Dawson's Creek). :) I've seen him in person, once. He was beautiful. And surprisingly skinny.

  13. Sounds like another cool show to watch! Alas, I have no regular television programming, but I'll settle for my laptop and writing books! ;)

    Happy F day!

  14. I didn't make it more than a few episodes in before deciding Fringe wasn't for me. Maybe it was because I never liked X-Files. I -almost- liked X-Files, but something just never clicked. It was a cool idea, but I couldn't get into the show. Fringe was the same.

  16. I've heard great things about Fringe, including the X-Files comparison. I think we'll wait for it to be out on Netflix (or at least a few seasons on DVD) to watch it, though...waaay too many good ones out now and not enough time. Thank you for another great rec!
