Ready. Set. Write! is a summer writing intensive that encourages goal-setting and accountability, and provides an opportunity for us to cheer each other on wherever we’re at with our writing projects—planning, drafting, revising, or polishing. This year, your RSW hosts are Alison Miller, Jaime Morrow, Erin Funk, Elodie Nowodazkij, and Katy Upperman. All the details are HERE.
Also check out #RSWrite on twitter.
Now it's time for GOALS and CHECK IN!
1. How I did on last week’s goals:
- Finish last details on The Revision That Won't Die. Send it off to either another reader or to agent. It just needs to leave my sight.
- YES! I finished! I wrote the last scene. What I sent off so far is a key scene to my critique group who meets this week. Then, either send to agent/reader.
- Brainstorm SHINY NEW PROJECT! It's a YA contemporary *likely* with 3 character points of view. I'd like to draft initial character goals and arcs, attempt to use the Save the Cat Beat Sheet (every project I try; every project I abandon it). Scribble in my cheapie story notebook to get ideas more fully formed.
- I didn't get as far as character or beat sheets, but I wrote two pages of notes on the characters. Also, I determined something really cool and geeky and awesome in how I'm going to write this novel. SUPER EXCITED.
- Finish at least 1-2 of the 5+ books I have started.
- YES! I finished Jane Eyre which I've been reading since April or so, and finished another book and read a graphic novel.
2. My goal(s) for this week:
- Complete critique group reading. Implement changes to chapter sent for review.
- More brainstorming, outlining, planning/prep for Shiny New Project.
- Sign up for Camp Nanowrimo in July. Plan a wordcount goal for July.
- Query Kombat commenting (I'm a judge for this online pitch contest going on now)
3. A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised:
- Final snapshot. Here are some fun images from my Pinterest inspiration board for the story.
4. The biggest challenge I faced this week:
- Summarizing a whole novel and theme into an ending shot that feels satisfying.
5. Something I love about my WiP:
- I'm done writing it :) For now. So ready to be on to the next.
Please share what you've been writing, reading, or plan to do for the next week. Don't forget to check the other blogs linked above and provide support!
Hooray for finishing up your WiP! What a relief that must be. :-) You did really well with all of your goals this week. I'm intrigued in the very best way by this "something really cool and geeky and awesome" thing. Especially the geeky part! Hope this is another productive week, Stephanie!
ReplyDeleteGoals really work for me. They're in the back of my mind, lurking.:)
DeleteCongrats on finishing your WIP! That's the best feeling!
ReplyDeleteI don't usually use beat sheets when I'm drafting but when I'm about to start revisions I use the Save the Cat beat sheet to see if things are where they're supposed to be, or if certain plot points are just too weak.
"Something cool and geeky and awesome..." Ooh, I can't wait to hear about it! :)
Congrats on finishing your revision! I love that exciting stage of starting a new project and brainstorming ideas.
ReplyDeleteYay for finishing your WiP! That's so awesome, Stephanie! Thanks for sharing your Pinterest board. I like to make one for each of my WiPs as well. Best of luck with your goals in the coming week, lady!
ReplyDeleteI kept trying to do Pinterest story boards and always lost interest until lately. They actually helped me craft a few missing scenes. It's helpful to see whether your images of the book are actually shown in the story.
DeleteWay to go on your goals! I used the Save the Cat Beat Sheet once and it *kinda* worked. :) It was a good exercise, at the very least. It got me thinking! Good luck this week!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on writing the final scene of your WiP revision! That must feel SO satisfying. :) And now you've inspired me to make a Pinterest board for my current project!
ReplyDeleteHappy writing this week, Stephanie!
It's a great feeling to say done! Even if just for the moment. Best of luck for this next week!
ReplyDeleteI am weirdly in love with the smores charm set on your mood board. And I love all the other pics too! And congrats on finishing your story!
ReplyDeletePS - I start a Beat Sheet for every story and abandon to start a project. BUT I do find myself going back to it and changing/adding things. I'm so not an outliner. :)
I LOVE Save the Cat beat sheets, but I think you have to take it with a grain of salt. Don't let it rule your story. There are exceptions to every rule! Congrats with finishing your revision. I hope you have another great week!
ReplyDeleteYes, true true. I wish I had that plotter's mind to use the beat sheets more, but I usually find them more useful during revision.
DeleteOH! I love your Sunset Summer board!! I've never seen it before. I'm so excited you joined RSW. And I can't wait to hear about your new idea!!
ReplyDeleteI've been making secret boards and pinning and then you can change the settings to public. That way you can pin a lot at once and not clog up your feed. I just made a bunch of book and story related boards in the past few months :)
DeleteCongrats on finishing it up! Sending it off must be so much fun! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing your final edits (and finishing book in your reading pile)!!! Also, yay for Shiny New Ideas! Is this the one you asked me about? If so, I'm even more excited for you & I'm so intrigued by the epiphany you apparently had for telling that story.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your goals this week, but also, enjoy a brief breather since you just finished off a WIP!
It is that story! I'm a bit hesitant to go into details on the blog since I'll eventually be pitching and subbing, but I will definitely chat about it offline/twitter DM. I will need some expertise :)
DeleteCongrats on finishing your WIP! That's such a great feeling. :)
ReplyDeleteI love your story Pinterest board. I make them for all of my stories, and they're so helpful, especially in the brainstorming stage. Sometimes an image will give me an idea for the setting, etc.
Good luck hitting this week's goals!
Jane Eyre is one of my favorites. True favorites. Way to go with your goals! You're definitely making more progress than me at this point.
