What are your goals for the new year---for reading, writing, or other?
- I've read so much YA fiction in the past two years, I'd like to mix it up more often. I'd like to read more non-fiction and adult market novels. My most recent library haul included a memoir, popular non-fiction history book, a writing craft book, and a fiction book that was popular with the book clubs a few years back.
- I am finalizing revisions to send my current writing projects to agents who requested material from a contest late in 2012. I'd like to start revising the draft I wrote during Nanowrimo in November and see where that leads.
- Other than that, I plan to keep blogging, and connecting with other writers and readers online, on twitter, and through RWA and SCBWI. I am tentatively planning on attending RWA Nationals in Atlanta in July!
Make sure to stop by the YA Highway blog for more responses!
Good goals. Very reachable. I highly recommend attending RWA. It's a great conference.
ReplyDeleteI don't know that I'll be reading a lot of YA this year (though some great YA books are coming out that I'll be getting). I too want to mix it up more. A few years ago I read hardly any YA. Last year, it was most of my reading. This is good, since my current writing projects are YA, and I need to know the market, and how good YA is written. But I have a lot of theology, history, and non-YA fiction I want to get to this year.
ReplyDeleteAll the best with your goals, Stephanie. I hope 2013 is a great year for you, especially with your agent requests. :)
I, accidentally (haha), have been reading 'out of my comfort zone' these past few months. I tend to lean more toward YA but a number of my pub sisters (okay... all of them haha) write adult, so I've been reading their work and LOVE them. It's a great goal to read diverse genres. I should read more nonfiction.
ReplyDeleteGreat goals for the New Year!
Since joining RWA, I've been reading more romance fiction--titles I never would have picked up before. I just read my first Jennifer Crusie novel--she's great, just like everyone said. My husband and I used to read some of the same books, but our reading interests have strayed the past few years. I'd like to read a few of his favorites--mostly sci-fi and speculative fiction.
DeleteGreat goals! Mixing up your reading is so important.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of mixing up my reading, as well. Especially trying out some classics and non-fiction. I've read a lot of debut and YA authors that I think mixing it up is a great thing, as well. Good luck with your goals and with the agents! Looks to be an exciting year!
ReplyDeleteGood goals! I'm trying to read more outside of YA too. I'd like to start looking for more nonfiction and adult books and memoirs. One of my goals for this year is to read ten classics as well because, outside of school-assigned ones, I've only ever read a few.
ReplyDeleteI have a few classics I want to get to: anything by the Bronte sisters, and The Great Gatsby. I have a thing about reading a book before the film comes out. I love a good memoir. I just read one I liked: When We Were the Kennedys by Monica Wood. I'm posting a review later this month.
DeleteSimple but great goals!
ReplyDelete*fingers crossed* I hope the agent loves your work!
Happy 2013 and good luck!
Good luck on your revisions and diversifying your reading. I keep meaning to pick up more non-fiction books, too. I have a little voice that nags me and tells me I should be reading something more educational than YA fiction.
ReplyDeleteI still want to read more classics, but aside from that I'm pretty comfortable reading mostly YA. The occasional adult book is fine, but I prefer YA. :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the submission! Keeping my fingers crossed for you. :)
Very good goals. I have recently started reading more widely also (adult thrllers) and thoroughly enjoying. I wish you luck with these!
ReplyDeleteThose are good succinct goals. Good luck with them!

Good luck with resubmitting to those agents. How exciting!
ReplyDeleteI don't read as much nonfiction as I used to. Malcolm Gladwell needs to write another book.
