Road Trip Wednesday: Best Book of June

Road Trip Wednesday:

Road Trip Wednesday is a Blog Hop hosted by YA Highway.
Today's topic is the best book you've read in June.

I just posted a review on Monday of my favorite book from June:

It's perfect read for summer: road trip, cute guy, introspective moments. Parts of the story get a little heavy considering the main character is grieving the loss of her brother who was killed serving in Iraq. The characters feel real and the imagry of the desert and the Pacific Ocean are beautiful. Like her debut YA novel Moonglass, the author excels at pulling themes from nature.

What's the best book you've read this month?

  1. I'm looking for some good Summer reads. :) Thanks for the recommendation!

  2. That cover is really off-putting to me. Judging by the cover, I wouldn't even pick up the book to read the blurb. :/ But maybe I'm being too hasty dismissing YA contemporaries...

  3. This is one of those books that I keep hearing good things about, but never even consider reading. And I feel like I really should read it...

  5. My favorite book so far this summer has been jThe Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. The book is so visual and the prose are beautiful. Also, in case you do audiobooks, the readers are fantastic.

Stephsco, you did a wonderful critquing my query in conjunction with Fresh as a Daisy blog. I can't find the query you would like reviewed. Let me know where to find it. I'd love to take a look.

    Best,
    Lois

  6. @Lois - I did not sign up for the query critique, so I don't have one posted. I just found your blog from that host blog. I'll stop by again to let you know!

  7. An interesting premise is one factor I consider when choosing books, and I think YA Contemporary has to lean particularly hard on the compelling premise for me to be interested (perhaps it's a guy thing? I don't know). I'm not sure if this one does it for me, though it's cool that you say the author creates characters that feel real, and has superior command of imagery. As writers it's always good to read people that do this well.

My pick for the month was a classic that I should have read a long time ago, and I assume that half the literate world has read already. :)

  8. IN HONOR was definitely one of my favourite June reads. I had too many to choose from this month! (What an awful, awful problem, right?) But I went with FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS because I'm a die-hard PERSUASION fan.

  9. Hey Colin, thanks for stopping by. In Honor isn't a book I would suggest for my husband -- he might not mind it, it's written well as I pointed out -- but it's just not his thing. In the same way China Meiville is an amazing writer and I love to hear him read snippets to me, but it's just not my Go-To type of book. I have a real soft spot for YA contemporary, which is where I intend to live as a writer, so I read lots of it.

  10. I hadn't heard of this book. Thanks for the info. I have Moonglass, but still haven't read it. If you saw my to-read pile, you'd understand!

This month, I loved Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu. Beautifully written.
