Blogging A to Z: Zaphod Beeblebrox

Welcome to the A to Z blogging challenge! All month long we'll be creating posts for each letter of the alphabet according to a theme. Click here to see the list of participating blogs.

My theme is Memorable Characters featuring characters from books, movies, and TV.

Zaphod Beeblebrox

From: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Known For: narcissism, general ass-hattery

Zaphod is the inept president of the galaxy in the absurdist Hitchhiker's caper. He hails from the planet Betelgeuse, is related to Ford Prefect through three common mothers, and invented the potent Pan-galactic Gargleblaster cocktail. He was also named worst dressed sentient being in the known universe (which is almost, but not quite as funny as the Vogons having the galaxy's third worst poetry, the first being a poor lady in England). I really like Sam Rockwell's portrayal of Zaphod in the 2005 movie version. He's wacky, but charming (how else could he have lured the much smarter Trillian?). He's loveable but a complete fool.

Fitting that Zaphod appears in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe as we have reached the end of the A to Z posts. Thanks for reading!

Stay tuned: usually the A to Z-ers do a wrap-up post in May. I'll have books to give away!

  1. I've only seen trailers and clips from the movie, and I can't say I really want to see it. Don't misunderstand--I've read the books, and I've seen the original BBC TV series a number of times (the first time was when it was first broadcast in the early 80s), so I'm a fan. I'm just not sure about the movie. :)

Well done for finishing the A-to-Z, Stephanie! I've enjoyed reading your posts. :)

    1. I know some hardcore fans of the book and BBC series do not love this movie. I totally get that. I really like the movie, flaws and all. I'd only read the book a few years prior to the movie so I don't have as long of a history with it.

    1. Yes, he is totally a DORK. That's a great word for him. The actor did such a great job--he won me over from this movie. Pretty much everything he's in he is great in.

  4. I didn't really think they adequately physically transitioned Zaphod from the book to the movie, BUT!
    Sam Rockwell was brilliant.

  5. Sam Rockwell is absolutely brilliant. I am glad they did not try to hard to transition him because Sam brought his own flavor to the character and owned the movie portion. I fell in love with this book at an early age. When hubby brought me into the fray of the Radio broadcast I lost part of my soul to it. I never leave home without a towel and if stuck on a desert island and only could choose three books this would be one! Thanks for visiting Cabin Goddess for A to Z this week!

    1. Oh wonderful about the Miss Snark connection! Her contest is how I connected with my agent. I learned a ton from that blog--I wouldn't have had much of a query without it.
