Summer Reading List: What Are You Reading?

Just a quick post to check in with everyone's summer reading goals. Do you have any? Mine are just to get caught up on as many books as I can when I have downtime. I took a break from YA earlier this year, reading some non-fiction, historical fiction, romance, mostly checking out books from the library. I was probably dropping off or picking up books just about every week for the past few months--I rotate audio books too for my commute.

I finally bought a few (or five) books at my local indie Anderson's. All YA. Here's my loot:

I've been working through a summer cold which sapped my weekend, but I read three books! I finished the top book there, Golden by Jessi Kirby, which was sweet, and sad, and really well done. She is a consistent contemporary YA writer. I also read Where She Went by Gayle Forman, an amazing companion book to If I Stay, about a girl looking in from beyond after a car accident. I just love her writing, and am so excited she is doing a similar type of companion book to Just One Day; rather than a typical series, this is just two books that are told from different character point of views in the same story universe. I also love how Forman really bends lines of what is YA; Where She Went takes place at least a year or so out of high school, the main character is in his early 20s.

So, now your turn: tell me what you're reading!

  1. Sorry to hear you have a summer cold. They're no fun!

Thanks for supporting indies. I'm taking a break from MG to read some YA. I'm still dying to read Poison and The Madness Underneath. But right now I'm reading In Darkness by Nick Lake. Already read all those Gayle Forman books. I love her writing too.

    1. I read First Grave on the Right earlier in the year; such an interesting voice, a unique book.

  3. I'm so sorry you had a cold, especially during the summer too. Thanks for sharing the books you've been reading.

I just finished reading Veronica Roth's INSURGENT. I'm currently reading Stephanie Kuehn's CHARM & STRANGE. And when I'm done with that, I plan to read Ellen Oh's PROPHECY. And I keep telling myself that before the end of summer, that I must read Gillian Flynn's GONE GIRL.

Oh, and I just added you on Twitter!

    1. Gone Girl was pretty disturbing to me, the emotional aspects mostly. The book definitely acheives what it set out to. I'd like to read Insurgent at some point, I flew through Divergent.

  5. Ooh, I just read The Lucy Variations - Sara Zarr rocked it again! I've been wanting to read Just One Day - it's on my TBR.

I hadn't heard of Golden, but I enjoyed In Honor, so I'll check it out. Thanks!

  6. Ooo... beautiful stack of books there... (And boo on the cold!)

I'm sadly lacking with my summer reads... I better get on that...

  7. I'm sniffling my way through a summer cold too. I'm currently reading The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George. I love a historical novel, especially with a powerful female character.

Recently I've been trying to plan out a story I'd like to write. Your blog is amazing so I hope you don't mind me stalking around for a bit! It's my first time to write fiction, so I'm feeling a little daunted!

    Hope you feel better soon!

  8. I just finished The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore and am starting Gone by Michael Grant.

I'm trying to read books in the same genre and style as my manuscript. When I first started writing, I used to do the opposite because I didn't want other works to influence my voice. I hadn't found it yet. The same isn't true after you do. Thank goodness.

You have a great reading list. Feel better soon and thank you for the writing goal suggestion. :)

  9. I just finished ALWAYS WATCHING by Chevy Stevens - good, but not as good as her first one, STILL MISSING. I'm about start Neil Gaiman's new one.

My Goodreads goal is to read 100 books this year. I'm a bit behind, but it's a fun goal to pursue. :)

  10. Gayle Forman intrigues me, I'll have to check out some of her stuff. I spend most of the Spring writing and buying books to read in the summer, when it's too hot to go outside. Mostly YA, though I am halfway through 'Dad is Fat' by Jim Gaffigan. Sooo funny!

Hope you're feeling better and enjoying your summer :-)

  11. I'm reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace again because other people on the internet are too. I'm also eleven books into a reread of A Series of Unfortunate Events after which I plan on rereading Adverbs as well. I recently started the second volume of a three-volume biography of Teddy Roosevelt. I've got several more books going so I'd like to finish a few before I start something new, but I think the next one on the list is the third Thursday Next book.

My current Goodreads goal is 60 books, but I'm at 53 already so I'm going to up it to 75 for now and maybe higher by the end of summer.
